Welcome to my world

Just a catch up on what my second year entails....
One project is called Intermediate Design, Research and Development. This is basically loads of primary and secondary research into a sketchbook which we respond to through various different techniques in 2d and 3d form such as drawing, draping on the stand, sampling etc. Very in depth this year though. Eventually we will create two garments that can be an outfit from the choices developed.
The second is called Live Project. This is about working alongside a real designer called Teatum Jones. again we do all the research and respond to this creating a collection but only actually making one of the outfits. Look Teatum Jones up, they have some lovely garments and their attention to detail is beautiful.
The third project is called Enterprise where we work in groups of 6 to create a business. We first have to submit a business plan that consists of our product. We have to all create the same basic product with slight alterations whether that be in the prints, shape, embellishment etc.
Lots of work! Then also the theory side which is all about Design, Style and Identity.... bit like representation!
Will be an interesting but one chat year. Get my head down now

London

So on my way to London. Train gets delayed. Trains are so annoying when you're on such a tight schedule. I'm off to do some fabric sourcing for my three projects. I'm looking for cottons, silks, leathers and anything interesting that I can find. I also need quite a stiff fabric that will hold 3d shapes. I will show you what ice got later :)

Monday's 'Accidental' Buys

Hey guys!
I headed out today to pick up a parcel at Royal Mail and ended up going back home through town. And of course, something caught my eye....
In Republic.

It was this.
A tye dye long top, that also had studs on the top.
Although there was 20% off for students, it still would have made it just over £20, which I thought was a total rip off. So I walked round the shop to see other pretty stuff.. I don't always find things in Republic but today everything I liked. I have found that all the high street shops this season hold all dark garments and we're seeing burgundys, cobalts, creams, browns and blacks. I just find it boring, I love colour and print and it just seems to be lacking at the moment. Republic actually had some cute things in there.
This cute little number. A denim shirt dress with cute stars on the bodice.
Aww birds on a playsuit :)
Love the length and the embellished top.

Then I realised I could pick up a vest top from Primark for a couple of quid and do it myself.
And of course, me being me, ended up coming across other things...

This is the vest I'm going to dye. I will do another blog post in a bit to show you the results! Excited. Love dying stuff haha. £2

Found this nice little shirt in the sale rack in Primark. £5

These tops I found, they're quite loose so can chill or could even use them for going out with jeans and a pair of heels. £6 each.

Would love to see what you guys have bought recently!

Dare devil?

I'm feeling a tad 'dare devilish' at the moment. I'm a person who likes to be in my comfort zone very much. I read somewhere the other day, 'you're only young once' and it finally sunk into my head that I am not getting any younger so f**k it, kinda thing! Wooo...

So when I decided to drive to Southampton from Portsmouth to shop, and not know where I was going it did shock me slightly. Paha. This is a big deal guys.

Southampton is hugeeeeee for shopping and mainly just high street shops and food places, although we didn't actually get round it all before we left. We all went shopping for something nice to wear that evening for a uni friends birthday. I had searched everywhere I could even in all the little cheap shops but not found anything, purely because I'm finding all this seasons colours, erm, a bit, crap if I'm honest.

I know it's autumn soon, but the weather's drab enough without all our clothes being the colour of bin bags aswell.
Things that are doing my nut in at the mo..
1. Army print. If I wanted to wear army print, I would have gone in the army. It was quite cool to begin with but now everyone has a camo jacket. Ergh.
2. Leopard print. Leopard print on dresses, on leggings, on hairband, shoes? Shoes? Really. Bore off leopard print.
Excuse the rant.

Hey, back to what I actually ended up with...
Picture is so terrible because I had to buy the worst, cheapest camera ever. The buttons are little gold studs. It's cute :) £18 (with student discount) from New Look (Cameo Rose section).

My Monday Wants!

I get so annoyed with myself for even looking at clothes on the internet. I want to find amazing bargains but never seem to find any and then I just feel awful if I go to buy them, because I'm just so poor! So many cute clothes out there. And then I find clothes at a reasonable price, but there's still £4 postage and packaging fee on it :( WAHHH!

These are a few I picked up today..
They look a bit like bowling shoes, but so cute. Vivienne Westwood; £250; Asos Marketplace
Floral Shirt Dress; £7.00; Asos Marketplace

Floral Shirt Dress; £10; Asos Marketplace
Embroidered shirt dress; £14; Asos Marketplace
Love the print on this tee; £20; Asos Marketplace

What have you found recently?

On my own

It's been a lonely day today. Been at my internship on my own and given jobs to do over the phone. It's quite nice that a business can trust me with taking care of things and they don't need to look over me/check on me all the time. I am quite happy just to get on with things.

The day is usually a mix of things, today I have been making their labels up which consist of a company label, a label with a picture of a model wearing the garment, a tie and a safety pin to attach to the garment, which I put together. Completed 119 of those today, with having done about 300 others before on other days. It's pretty boring, but so easy so once you get into the routine can get them done pretty quickly.

The next thing I did today was to steam a garment that a customer requires for an exchange, that will be processed and sent out tomorrow when the designers return.

I had to complete a stock take of all the garments they stock. It's a process which I believe is so important within a company, easy to do, but sometimes just do not have the time for. But how can you sell something if you don't even know if you have stock of it! So I made a nice little chart for them to hopefully help them out. I like being creative, so that job kept me on my toes!

Olympics!

I read the following comment relating to an article posted about the U.S Olympic Uniform being Made In China;

"Ralph Lipschitz has been making schitz in China that for decades but silly American consumers have bought into the ridiculous brand/image of this garbage paying through the nose for stuff that could be bought elsewhere for half the price without the pony..."
Posted by globeistp

It got me thinking...

For something that should be a symbolism of the country, pride and patriotic, I think that the Olympic uniforms should be made in their own country.
As an iconic American designer, Ralph Lauren should want see it as a representation of the country he bases his fashion label on, and where he is based when designing. Instead, he sees it as a money making situation. Get cheap labour and make more profit.

And then there's uproar about why Stella McCartney has taken the red out of the GB Olympic teams outfits. I don't quite understand why she has keep it to trims and trainers. I'm not particularly keen on the overall look, but they look smart, representable and won't take attention away from the actual sporting activities. Plus, they're meant to be practical not necessarily fashionable!

(Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images for adidas)http://www.metro.co.uk/olympics/893909-team-gbs-london-2012-olympic-outfits-unveiled

I personally enjoy watching the olympics, I would have loved to have gone to see any of the events, they were just way overpriced for a student aha! I will be keeping up-to-date with it though through the internet and watching the bits that I can. One downside is that I'll still be commuting into and out of London 3 days a week to do my internship which is not going to be fun, considering the Mayor of London keeps stating on loudspeaker at Euston station that we are expecting over 1 million visitors over these next few weeks. Oh the joys! I actually tapped into Google Maps to see how long it would take me to walk from Euston to Peaks and it's about a half and hour walk, not too bad really, so may consider that! Hopefully it'll be dry.

Internship

My first day at Peaks of London went well. Was introduced to a few people who work there including the business partner of the company. Everyone is lovely which is always a plus when working!

Before I got to Peaks, I was so early that I decided to pop into H&M in Covent Garden! Normally I don't find much in H&M, but I could have easily spent £100 in there! One thing that particularly caught my eye was this super cute tassel jacket which I sneakily took a picture of!
H&M, £24.99
So off to my intern I went. Firstly learning how to steam which was sooo much easier than flat ironing, wonderful!! Then I was sent to send of a parcel that was being sent to Paris and contained garments to show customers. Others things I did today included getting boards photocopied to a reduced size, photocopying sheets, printing out press and making company tags up and creating a retailers mood board.

All in all it was an interesting first day. Although it seems as if I was given all the poo jobs, I would have to do them anyway if I were to set up a business or to work for a company.

Tomorrow I have been asked to research all about breastfeeding, which will be interesting as I really don't know much about it. I am assuming this will influence the designs that the designers create.

Just a quick blog, if you have any questions about the Internship, please don't hesistate to ask me! Inbox me if you want, emma_horton@hotmail.co.uk

Wireless Festival

Such a long day, but so worth it.

I watched Stooshe, Lloyd, Pitbull, J.Cole, Jessie J and Rihanna perform. They were all really good. Jessie J's voice is out of this world, even though people say she shows off, she has the ability to, so good for her! Rihanna just brought something else to the day with everyone singing along to ALL her songs which was quite surreal.

SOOOOO fashion! Most of the people were wearing wellies. Alot of Hunters around the place. Only saw one person in a Barbour jacket. But the most common garment were the short shorts! Can I just say one thing? Some people suit short shorts, but some just don't! I wish I could wear them but I know I can't get away with it. They don't do any favours for some people!

I didn't actually get a photo to show you guys of what I was wearing but I'll try and explain it. A Rihanna top with a Jessie J top under ;) Haa! then high waisted floral shorts and apple printed wellies! So I was very colourful.

I did however get some pictures of the acts.

Sorry for the poor quality but we were quite far away! Haa!

Placement

I had a second interview for a different placement today which was all very exciting. They are called retro uk/magic apparels and they supply clothes for high street shops like Primark and Dorothy Perkins. I was interviewed by a very sweet assistant designer. Not sure if I'll get it as it'll have to work around my Peaks of London internship owp! I'll keep you updated! She talked about studs and lace being very popular at the moment. And I love both! Lace is such a feminine touch and I think you can go both extreme and minimalist with it. Studs are a nice accessory. Love them against leather to bring back that whole punk, edgey feeling.
Also went to Berwick Street today to look at some fabric shops. Very expensive but lovely unique fabrics. Saw some gorgeous silk that was £150, yikes!!!! 100% silk has such a lovely feel to it and it just flows so nicely against the body.

Over the weekend I'm going to have a look at cars tomorrow as the lovely boyfriend has just (finally) passed his test, (WAHOO). And then Sunday off to Wireless. It'll be interesting to see what the stars and the audience will be wearing. (pics to follow).
What are you doing this weekend?

Wireless Festival

Hey lovelies!
So I'm off to Wireless Festival on Sunday to see the beautiful Jessie J and Rihanna. Very excited. Went a few years ago but the headliners were Basement Jaxx and Dizzie Rascal so it's got a much better line up now.
Gutted that we can't see Drake and Nicki Minaj though, because they would have been good live!

BUT!!!! And a big but...

I've just had a look at the weather, and it's meant to RAIN!!!!
I'm not a rain fan whatsoever. I know that I should just be happy to be at Wireless, and it won't change my mood, I just want it to be dry!

So get your mac and wellies out and suck it up!!!

Internship with Peaks of London

So I got the internship, waaahooo!

Very excited. The designer was so lovely and made me feel very comfortable. She said I'd be involved in various things so hopefully I won't be just running around after everyone! And I start Tuesday for 3 days a week.

Then when I get in, I get a reply from another company asking me to come for an interview with them for another internship on Friday. Ahhh. It's all very exciting and hopefully I'll be able to fit both in before I go back to uni. If not, then one internship is better than nothing!

Hope you're all well.
Have you got any internships/or had any over the summer?

Internship!!!!

I've got a 'chat' tomorrow with 'Peaks of London' for an internship, hoping to get it. They design clothes for women who are breastfeeding. It's all very clever and for a niche market. I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous, but I guess I'm not being interviewed for a real job. Wish me luck! :)

New Designers

Hey lovelies!
I went to New Designers in The Business Centre, London today. It's an exhibition that graduates from many universities/colleges get to show their work to the public and people in the business. The good thing about it is it's not just fashion or textiles graduates, it's many different aspects of art and design. I was attracted to the bold colourful prints although everything was very inspirational! I managed to pick up some of their business cards, the following are the ones I found the most interesting and their contact details. Their websites are usually quite interesting to look at.

Have you been to any exhibitions recently, if so which ones?
